Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar, an Army helicopter pilot, and a Columbia Studios janitor before he became one of country music's most recorded songwriters. He said he had a frog voice and couldn't sing. So he gave the songs to people who could.
Between 1969 and 1980, ten of his compositions climbed all the way to the top of the country and pop charts — and every one of them was sung by somebody else. Janis Joplin took "Me and Bobby McGee" to #1 on the Hot 100 just months after her death. Johnny Cash made "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" the CMA Song of the Year. Sammi Smith won a Grammy with "Help Me Make It Through the Night." Ray Price's "For the Good Times" rescued his entire career after eleven years of nothing.
