December 2019. After the worst year of his life — pneumonia, intensive care, a fall that wrecked his spine, and a diagnosis he hadn't yet told the world — Ozzy Osbourne did something he had never done before. He wrote a song entirely on his own. A quiet, plain song for Sharon, about forty years of leaving the kitchen light on for each other.

He asked Willie Nelson to play on it. Willie said yes before the song had even finished.

But when Willie walked into the studio, he found the song buried under thirty violins, a French horn, timpani and a gospel choir. He sat through the playback, set his old guitar Trigger across his knees, and told the room plainly: he wasn't sure he could be part of this.

What followed was a late-night conversation between two old survivors about fear, failing voices, and the thing Ozzy was really trying to hide behind all those strings.

Sometimes the shake isn't what's wrong with the song. Sometimes the shake is the song.
