After Dolly Parton’s death, one thing that stood out to me was how many Black folks were genuinely mourning her.

And if you only knew Dolly as a legendary white country singer, you might not immediately understand why.

But when you look at her life, it makes a lot of sense. Her connection to Whitney Houston, her investment in literacy through the Imagination Library, her support for healthcare and research, and the dignity she seemed to extend to ordinary people gave her a reach far beyond country music.

This video is my small reflection on why Dolly meant something to so many different people.
