Lyrics:
The moon is a sliver of bone in the sky,
The owls in the timber are starting to cry.
I’ve got silver in the saddle and lead in my gun,
But you can't shoot a shadow, you only can run.
So I dig in my spurs and I loosen the rein,
And I pray that my mare can outgallop the pain.

Oh, the hoofbeats echo in the hollow below,
Where the river runs black and the briar bush grow.
There's a curse on my blood, there's a hound on my trail,
And a whistling wind that sounds like a wail.
Ride on, ride on, before the morning goes pale!

They say that the devil rides a stallion of smoke,
With a whip made of lightning and a fire-spun cloak.
Well, I hear him behind me, he's gaining some ground,
Through the roots and the mud, it’s a terrible sound.
But my steed is a creature of muscle and bone,
And we'll race him clear up to the judgment throne.

Oh, the hoofbeats echo in the hollow below,
Where the river runs black and the briar bush grow.
There's a curse on my blood, there's a hound on my trail,
And a whistling wind that sounds like a wail.
Ride on, ride on, before the morning goes pale!

Faster, faster, through the dark pine trees!
No time for a prayer, no time for my knees.
Just the sweat and the dirt and the cold midnight breeze!

Hoofbeats in the hollow.
Don't let him follow.
Ride on.
Ride on.
