Johnny Cash told the story for thirty years. A young songwriter named Kris Kristofferson stole a helicopter, landed it on Cash's front lawn in Hendersonville, climbed out with a beer in one hand and a demo tape in the other, and refused to leave until Cash listened.

It's one of the best-loved stories in country music. Kristofferson let it stand for decades. He only corrected it after Cash and June Carter had both died — and the reason he waited is the best thing about him.

This is the full story: the Rhodes Scholar who turned down West Point to sweep floors at a Nashville recording studio, the song Janis Joplin recorded weeks before she died, the night he walked onstage at Madison Square Garden while twenty thousand people booed the woman beside him, and what really happened on that lawn.

Sourced from Kristofferson's own interviews, Cash's published account, contemporary reporting, and Sinéad O'Connor's memoir. Where the two versions conflict, we give both.
