In this lesson I'll show you two ways to play Jolene. First up is the fingerpicked version, including that iconic intro riff that makes the song instantly recognisable. The picking moves along at a decent pace so it's a fun challenge if you've got some fingerpicking under your belt. Then in the second half I break down an easy strummed version. Jolene is built on just three chords, so if you'd rather keep it simple and sing along, this version has you covered no matter where you're at on your guitar journey.

Here's something wild about this song: Dolly Parton wrote Jolene and I Will Always Love You on the very same day. Two of the biggest songs in country music history, written in one sitting. And the real Jolene was actually a mash-up of two people, a red-headed bank teller who kept flirting with Dolly's husband, and a young fan named Jolene who came up on stage for an autograph. Dolly borrowed the flirting from one and the name from the other.

Whichever version you choose, take it slow and have fun with it. This song sounds great even at half speed, so don't stress about matching the record straight away.
